FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS:

WHAT IS THIS INITIATIVE?

We are health professional students (e.g. medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental etc.) who want to help health care providers in Los Angeles with urgent household needs (childcare, pet care, household errands) while they perform essential clinical duties during COVID-19.

This idea was initially started by students at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Medical School (where it is known as MN CovidSitters), and has expanded to other campuses since then. We appreciate their tremendous effort in launching their program and support in establishing this program in LA - it would not have been possible without their help!

WHO IS ORGANIZING THIS PROGRAM?

This program is led by medical students (across all four years) from the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of USC. Please note that we operate independently of KSOM and are not officially endorsed by the school.

WHO ARE THE VOLUNTEERS?

Our volunteers are students from the health professional schools at USC (primarily KSOM). All of our volunteers are BLS certified, up to date on vaccinations, and have passed a background check per their medical school admission requirements. We will do our best to match you with a volunteer whose experience fits your needs. Please keep in mind that while some volunteers have previous experience, they are not certified childcare professionals.

WHERE IS THIS HAPPENING?

Our volunteers will mostly be coming to your home to babysit, pet-sit, etc.

WHAT AGES DO YOU BABYSIT? WHAT KIND OF SERVICES ARE PROVIDED?

We are offering childcare for children up to 14 years old. However, because our students are not formally trained in childcare or providing home care for people with disabilities, we are unable to provide services for children or adults with complex developmental needs. If you are uncertain if this applies to you, please reach out to our coordinators at lacountycovidvolunteers@gmail.com.

Apart from childcare services, students can provide pet care/walking, grocery shopping, pharmacy runs, and other household errands, provided that you give them authorization.

HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST?

Payment is not required, since we want to provide a free service for folks who are busy providing care for others. Our student volunteers know that this is a voluntary service.

However, if you rely on your students to complete additional household tasks such as grocery shopping, pharmacy runs, etc. please pay them in full for these purchases.

HOW LONG CAN I RECEIVE CHILDCARE?

Currently, we ask that you evaluate your needs weekly.

Please note that our students do have academic duties to fulfill, though their curriculum is fully online. Therefore, your student(s) may have educational requirements to meet during their voluntary “babysitting” hours. If you find yourself needing them for more hours than our students can manage, please reach the coordination team at support@LACCV.org so we can re-evaluate.

CAN WE COMBINE CHILDREN FROM DIFFERENT HOUSEHOLDS?

Unfortunately, due to health concerns, we can only accommodate children from the same household (i.e. siblings, live-in relatives).
